Term 1 learning overview

Welcome to the Pohutukawa Poster's blog - Room 15
Over the next few weeks we will be getting to know each other and learning classroom routines.

We are creating a class treaty based on our school values of...
       RESPECT           RESPONSIBILITY          RESILIENCE
The treaty will support us with caring for each other and our environment. We want to create a 'happy zone' in Room 15 where everyone is treated with respect. A place where we can learn and grow together as a class.

This year our inquiry learning relates to 'sustainability' and we will be following the Pathways to Learning inquiry learning model to develop research skills. Our theme for term 1 is Wonderful Water.

We are learning about Statistics and becoming "Data Detectives"!  We are following the Statistical enquiry cycle:

To begin with, we asked everyone in our class this question:  "When is your birthday?"
We each drew a birthday cake and made a picture graph or pictograph by gluing our drawing above the month that our birthday is in. We displayed our data on a bar graph. We talked about the months of the year that had the mostthe least or the same number of birthdays.

Over the next two weeks we will use other types of graphs to display data when we investigate other problems using the statistical enquiry cycle above.

Here is a photograph of Emily,  who all had their birthdays since December so far.  They are standing near Room 1's birthday picture graph or pictograph.

Last week, we embarked on our literacy learning journey. The Effective Literacy Tumble is a sequence of purposeful literacy activities that are designed for independent learning. Once we are familiar with the tumble, guided reading and writing groups will begin with me (Mrs Lawson). This is what the Effective Literacy Tumble "looks like"...

Term 4, 2014 overview

Welcome back to school for our last term of the year

All the children in Room 1 had a good rest over the holidays after our busy time with the school production last term.  Everyone has arrived back at school refreshed and eager to learn for our final term of the year. Our learning overview for this term is as follows:

Some reminders:

Technology: Please help your child to collect clean waste materials such as plastic bottles and packaging to reuse for our technology project. Bring them to school in a named plastic bag. Any extra clean waste materials can be shared. There is a green box to put them into near the sink in Room 1.

Speeches: A letter will be sent home soon with information about writing a short speech (2 minutes) to present to the class. Please support your child with deciding on a subject for their speech. A topic they feel passionate about and have some knowledge of is a best. They will need to find information relating to this topic both at home and at school, in order to write an interesting speech.

Pohutukawa Sports: Please ensure your child is wearing suitable shoes for our athletic sports rotation on Fridays and for practising sprint running on other days.

Swimming: The pool is open and we will begin swimming a little later in the term when the weather is warmer.

Library Day: Monday    Swimming Day: To be advised
